Yokes & Joysticks

The control input is the single decision that shapes how your simulator feels, and the right answer depends entirely on what you fly.
A yoke is what you want for airliners, general aviation and anything with a control column. The two-handed grip and the push-pull motion match what the aircraft actually does, and the longer throw gives you finer pitch control during an approach. Logitech’s Pro Flight Yoke has been the default entry point for years. Honeycomb’s Alpha added a hall effect sensor and a much heavier build, and CH Products still make an Eclipse yoke with more programmable functions than most people will ever assign.
A joystick or HOTAS setup suits fighters, helicopters and anything where you are flying with one hand and managing throttle with the other. HOTAS stands for hands on throttle and stick, and the point is that you never take your hands off the controls to reach for a keyboard. Thrustmaster’s Warthog is a full metal replica of the A-10C controls and is built accordingly. The Logitech X52 and X56 sit lower down and give you most of the function for a fraction of the outlay.
If you fly both, buy for whichever you fly most. Adding the second type later is easier than living with the wrong first choice.
